Welcome To The Eureka Park Challenge

Produced by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, in a partnership with the National Science Foundation (NSF), Startup America Partnership and NY Tech Meetup, the Eureka Park Challenge recognizes the entrepreneurs and start-ups with the most innovative and unique products, services or apps.

Entries for the Eureka Park Challenge were evaluated by 12 judges. The finalists were selected based on the level of innovation and uniqueness, potential to make a profound impact on the market, feasible design, user-friendliness and functionality and viable business model.

Over the course of two days during the CEA Line Shows, judges will interview the finalists and view product demos. On closing day at 12:45 p.m., each finalist will have the opportunity to make a final pitch on stage before a live audience. Our panel of esteemed judges and CEA Line Shows attendees will vote for a grand prize, second place and fan favorite winner.

So what’s up for grabs?

. First place, as chosen by our judges and audience, will receive a 10x10 booth in the Eureka Park TechZone at the 2013 International CES, up to $2,000 in booth space expenses, travel expenses covered up to $3,000, and $5,000 cash.

. Second place, as chosen by our judges and audience, will receive a 10x10 booth in the Eureka Park TechZone at the 2013 International CES and $1,000.

. Fan favorite, as chosen by our audience, receives bragging rights.

John Backus is a seasoned technology investor and entrepreneur with 25+ years of experience investing in and managing rapidly growing, high-technology companies. Prior to founding New Atlantic Ventures in 1998, he was a founding investor and the president and CEO of InteliData Technologies, a Fast 50 growth company in both 1997 and 1998. Backus led InteliData’s predecessor, US Order, through a successful $65 million IPO in 1995. He currently manages a $225 million venture portfolio at New Atlantic Ventures.

In addition, he serves on the board of directors of AppTap, Invincea, Koofers, Healthwearhouse.com, My Wines Direct, and Qliance. He is the past chairman of the Wolf Trap Foundation Board of Directors, the past chairman of the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) Board of Directors, the founding chairman and current board member of the NVTC TechPAC, and was appointed by former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner to co-chair the Virginia Research and Technology Advisory Commission, which he served on for four years.

Backus began his career at Bain & Co. And Bain Capital, where he was the first Bain & Co. Management consultant to take a full time operating role (as CFO) in a portfolio company. He has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Stanford University and an MBA from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business.

Best Buy Co. Inc.

Rick Rommel is senior vice president and general manager of the Exclusive Brands Business for Best Buy Co. Inc., a multinational retailer of technology and entertainment products and services. Rommel serves a key role in driving this growth business, which serves Best Buy and external customers in 14 countries.

Rommel is known for his ability to incubate and grow business initiatives. Most recently, he led the New Business Customer Solutions Group, leveraging his internal and external partnerships to challenge current business model conventions and develop new long term growth opportunities. Before that he was vice president/general manager for Best Buy’s digital imaging business. In this position, he was responsible for the rapid growth of Best Buy’s digital camera business and introduced advanced photo services to the consumer.

Prior to Best Buy, Rommel was director of retail digital systems for Eastman Kodak. In this position, he oversaw Kodak’s global strategy for the company’s retail kiosk and photofinishing solution businesses. Previous to Kodak, he worked for North Communications as vice president of operations and senior vice president of sales and marketing, where he managed the design, development and operation of kiosk and internet solutions. No stranger to innovation and problem-solving, Rommel also worked as a rocket scientist for the Hughes Space and Communication Co. For 10 years, where he developed ground segment software in addition to developing satellite controls and satellite modeling.

A native of southern California, Rommel holds a bachelor’s degree in physics and a master’s degree in computer science from Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles. He lives in the Twin Cities with his wife and their two children.

At 26, Jake Sigal quit his XM product management gig at Delphi and combined his two passions, engineering and music, to start Livio Radio from the guest bedroom of his metro-Detroit home. Today, the 30-year-old is an established entrepreneur and founder and CEO of Livio Radio, with more than 25 products on the market.

Sigal earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering from Ohio University and sits on the Consumer Electronics Association’s (CEA)® Board of Industry Leaders (BIL) and the Small Business Council (SBC). In his spare time, Sigal loves listening to house, electro and dubstep, and riding his fixed-gear bike.

Dana Wollman is the senior reviews editor at Engadget, where she manages the reviews program and covers a mix of laptops and tablets. Before joining the site last year, she wrote about finance for the Associated Press and spent years reviewing gadgets for Laptop Magazine. A graduate of Wesleyan University and the Columbia Publishing Course, she started her journalism career in women’s magazines before making her way to nerdier publications. When she’s not testing laptops, she enjoys long-distance running, traveling and taking photos as she goes.
